About Lions Clubs

A Brief History of Lions Club

The Lions Club International is a service organization founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman, to foster a spirit of “generous consideration” among peoples of the world and to promote good government, good citizenship, and an active interest in civic, social, commercial, and moral welfare.
Jones remained an active member of the Lions Clubs until his death in 1961. The organization originally began as a group of men who wanted to serve their communities and make a difference in the world. Today, Lions Club has grown to become one of the largest and most respected service organizations in the world, with over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and territories. Our motto is “We Serve,” and our members are known for their service to their communities through various charitable and volunteer activities. The Lions Club also has a strong focus on sight conservation and providing assistance to those in need.
